Jimmy Carr makes tax avoidance joke on Big Fat Quiz of the Year

Comedian was among the wealthy individuals revealed to have taken part in a tax avoidance scheme in 2012

Jimmy Carr opened the 2020 Big Fat Quiz of the Year with a gag about tax avoidance.

During the intro, the comedian – who was presenting the show – ran though some of the biggest headlines of the past 12 months.

At one point, he referenced the story where it was revealed that outgoing US president Donald Trump had paid just $750 (£580) in federal income tax in 2016.

“I don’t know about you but I’m warming to the guy,” Carr quipped.

The 48-year-old was notoriously exposed for taking part in a tax avoidance scheme in 2012.

An investigation by The Times accused Carr of sheltering £3.3m a year through the K2 scheme, a legal way of lowering the amount of tax paid

Carr apologised at the time, saying he made an “error of judgement”.

“I'm no longer involved in it and will in future conduct my financial affairs much more responsibly. Apologies to everyone,” he said.

In a recent interview with Micky Flanagan on the Sky One show Peeping Behind the Curtain, Carr said he had feared he would lose his career over the scandal.

“Making money stops making any kind of sense. You're not being paid for what you do anymore – you're being paid for who you are,” he said.

“It did feel that I was going to lose it all. It felt like maybe I was going to get cancelled. Maybe that's it, maybe I won't be able to work or tour again. It was scary.”

Elsewhere on the quiz show, fans spotted an awkward result of the seating arrangements for the celebrity panellists, which had radio presenter Maya Jama sat in front of a huge photo of her ex-partner, Stormzy.
