Joe Mande quits Twitter with searing, sensational departing tweet
'Twitter is not fun anymore. It's vicious and ugly.'
I imagine a fair percentage of Twitter's users fantasise about deleting their account - even the very active ones - but whether it's down to their career or just the need to feel connected, few are brave enough to enter the world of No Twitter.
Comedian, screenwriter, actor and Master of None producer Joe Mande has had enough, though, and gleefully announced on Monday night: "Bye, y’all! I’m leaving!"
Likening Twitter to smoking embalming fluid given the similar "dysphoric" highs they produce, Mande characterised the service thus:
"Here's the thing, though: Twitter is not fun anymore. It's vicious and ugly. Over the past couple of years, it's basically become a place we all go to scream about, and thereby indulge, the mental illness of a demented 71-year-old comic book villain. If it's not that, then we're screaming at someone we don't agree with, or screaming at someone we do agree with, because that person did something that we don't agree with."
He was pleased to be leaving, presumably to go run free in a field, but lamented: "I'm sure eventually some new stupid-ass app will come along to distract me the way Twitter used to."
