Danbury mayor responds to John Oliver rant

John Oliver will have a sewage plant in Danbury, Connecticut, named after him after he went on an expletive-filled rant about the city on his HBO show.

In a recent episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, the British-born comedian analysed racial disparities in the US jury selection process. He cited problems in Hartford and New Britain.

“If you’re going to forget a town in Connecticut,” he then said, “why not forget Danbury? Because, and this is true, f*** Danbury!”

Oliver said that he knew “exactly three things” about Danbury: that USA Today ranked it as the second-best city to live in 2015, that it was once the centre of the US hat industry, and, “if you’re from there, you have a standing invite to come get a thrashing from John Oliver, children included, f*** you”.

It is not entirely clear what prompted Oliver's outburst. The Independent has contacted his representative for comment.

In response to Oliver’s rant, Danbury’s Republican mayor Mark Boughton announced the news of the sewage plant renaming on his Facebook page.

“We are going to rename it the John Oliver Memorial Sewer Plant,” he said.

“Why? Because it’s full of crap, just like you, John.”

Oliver previously made fun of Boughton and other mayors in 2017, over videos they made attempting to lure Amazon to build its second world headquarters in their towns.

“By the way, thanks for showing that Amazon video,” Boughton commented at the end of the new video. “We did get Amazon here in Danbury.”
