Former EastEnders star Katie Jarvis has appeared in court after being charged for her involvement in a racially aggravated bar fight.

The actor, who played the role of Hayley Slater on the soap from 2018 to 2019, was arrested on 31 July 2020 following a physical altercation at a bar in Southend.

She is accused of assault, racially aggravated harassment, using threatening words or behaviour, assault by beating a woman and assault by beating an 11-year-old girl, The Sun reports.

Jarvis appeared at Southend Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (14 April) to confirm her name and intent to plead not guilty.

Her representative told the court that Jarvis was the victim of the attack and was acting in self defence. She will next appear in court on 13 May.

In 2019, many celebrities spoke out in defence of the actor after she was shamed by newspapers for working as a security guard in a shop after leaving EastEnders.

Appearing on Victoria Derbyshire, Jarvis said that she’d felt “degraded”, “really embarrassed” and “quite ashamed” by the reports.
