Viewers have described The Masked Singer as the “worst TV I have ever seen” following the ITV show’s launch on Saturday night (4 January).

The singing contest, hosted by comedian Joel Dommett, sees celebrities perform underneath an elaborate costume, meaning they can only be identified by their voice.

Jonathan Ross, Davina McCall, Ken Jeong and Rita Ora make up the judging panel.

The first episode featured former EastEnders actor Patsy Palmer as one of the hidden singers.

Viewers were not impressed, with many describing the show as the worst thing they had ever seen on television in their lives.

“Gave up after 45 minutes of the worst bit of TV in years,” wrote one person. “Concept is a good one. Execution hopeless. One unmasking after 90 minutes of television?”

“This is the worst programme ever seen on television,” wrote another.

A third wrote: “The masked singer is 100% the worst thing I have ever watched in my life.”

One viewer described watching the show as like “experiencing an acid trip without even touching any drugs”.

Others mocked the series for featuring celebrities who are not very well-known.

The Masked Singer continues on Saturday nights on ITV.
