Michael Barrymore has quit Dancing on Ice weeks before the launch of the show’s 12th series.

The 67-year old will be replaced by former Blue Peter presenter Radzi Chinyanganya, who will be partnered with professional skater Jessica Harfield.

Barrymore broke his wrist after falling during rehearsals for the infamous ice skating competition. The Strike It Lucky host described himself as being ‘‘absolutely devastated’’ for having to pull out the show.

‘‘I have loved every second of the journey so far with my wonderful dance partner Alex Murphy and the support from the public has been overwhelming. I shall be in the studio for the first show on 5 January and hope to make other appearances throughout,’’ he said.

Chinyanganya expressed sympathy for Barrymore with his departure, hailing the popular entertainer as ‘‘one of my all-time favourite TV presenters’’.

‘‘We’ve only got two weeks to get ready to ice skate in front of the nation so I’m looking forward to a Christmas and New Year filled with training on the ice,’’ the children’s television presenter said.

He will be joined by ex-footballer Kevin Kilbane, Love Island contestant Maura Higgins and Ian “H” Watkins from Steps.

The new series of Dancing on Ice will hit television screens on Sunday 5 January.
