Mrs Brown's Boys to get five more Christmas specials until 2020, says Brendan O'Carroll

The sitcom's star and creator said he had already been commissioned to write two further Christmas specials

Brendan O’Carroll has confirmed he has signed up to make Christmas specials of his opinion-dividing sitcom until 2020.

The actor said there were already two Mrs Brown’s Boys Christmas specials in the pipeline, with the BBC and Irish broadcaster RTE expecting festive shows for the next five years.

“I have been commissioned to write another two Christmas specials and the BBC are expecting Christmas specials up until 2020. I am lucky enough I can grow into the part so that is nice,” he told The Daily Mirror.

The news comes after the 2014 Mrs Brown’s Boy festive special topped the Christmas Day ratings, becoming one of the most-watched programmes ever on 25 December.

“Buckin’ Mammy” pulled in 9.4 million viewers, beating the EastEnders, Call the Midwife, Downton Abbey, Doctor Who and Miranda Christmas specials.

O’Carroll has also denied rumours that the sitcom was due to finish, saying that a quote his son had given to a newspaper was taken out of context.

“There is absolutely no truth in the story I am not writing any more Mrs Brown’s Boys. I am,” he said.

The sitcom, which began in 2011, has split opinion due to its crude and slapstick humour.

Critics have called it the “worst comedy ever made”, with The Independent’s Grace Dent saying: “To love Mrs Brown one must be thrilled by a man in a hairnet and dinner lady tabard saying the F-word roughly once every ten minutes”.

Writing earlier this year in The Independent, Archie Bland called the sitcom’s film Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie “dreadful”.

It went on to make £18.3 million at the box office.
