It’s a comedy that has divided opinion across the country – and now some will be pleased to hear it is unlikely that Mrs Brown’s Boys will return for a full series.

The sitcom may be limited to Christmas specials in the future due to creator Brendan O’Carroll’s busy schedule, according to BBC comedy controller Shane Allen.

Allen told trade newspaper Broadcast that it would be “hard to get another series” of the popular show due to O’Carroll’s other commitments.

But he added that he had been speaking to the actor about other projects, and that he “wants to stay with the BBC”.

Fans will be able to catch up with Agnes and Cathy Brown soon when the Irish gang return for a festive special on Christmas day.

The sitcom, which pulled in 9.4 million viewers for its Christmas special last year, has split opinion due to its crude and slapstick humour.

Critics have called it the “worst comedy ever made”, with The Independent’s Grace Dent saying: “To love Mrs Brown one must be thrilled by a man in a hairnet and dinner lady tabard saying the F-word roughly once every ten minutes”.

Writing earlier this year in The Independent, Archie Bland called the sitcom’s film Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie “dreadful”.

It went on to make £18.3 million at the box office.

Mrs Brown's Boys will air on Christmas Day at 10pm on BBC1.
