Tony Awards 2018: Round-up of the 72nd ceremony

Neil Patrick Harris has been schooled by actor Rachel Bloom after he failed to recognise the Golden Globes winner despite having met her several times.

Harris, best known for playing Barney Stinson on sitcom How I Met Your Mother, critiqued Bloom’s hosting style backstage at the Tony Awards and brazenly asked who she was.

“Who is the woman in the top hat backstage at @TheTonyAwards? Gideon remarked that she says ‘like’ and ‘oh my god’ a lot. I’m confused…” Harris wrote on Twitter.

Gideon is his seven-year-old son.

Bloom, famed for creating, writing, and playing the lead role of Rebecca Bunch in series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, hit back to uncomfortably point out the fact they had actually met “several times”.

She graciously informed Harris, who plays Count Olaf on Netflix series A Series of Unfortunate Events, she was a big fan of his.

“I’m a big fan of yours. We’ve met numerous times and my husband, Dan Gregor, wrote for How I Met Your Mother for 5 years,” Bloom said.

“Notably, he wrote the episode where your character finally meets his father.”

While Harris did not explicitly apologise, he did continue the awkward exchange by thanking her for the reminder.

“Indeed! Well said. Thanks for the reminder. How was backstage?” he said.

Twitter users pointed out the awkwardness of the pair’s interaction.

“Dude, you're embarrassing yourself. The lady's got a Golden Globe AND 4 Emmy nominations,” one said before Harris became aware of his error.

Harris, who hosted the show in 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013, did not attend the 72nd annual Tony Awards which was held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City and attended by Broadway’s biggest actors.

He also hosted the 87th Academy Awards in 2015 - making him the first openly gay man to host the Oscars.
