‘She knew something was up’: Phillip Schofield opens up about coming out to his mother

Presenter came out in February in emotional Instagram post

Phillip Schofield has spoken about coming out to his mother.

In February this year, the This Morning host released an emotional statement on Instagram revealing his sexuality.

The television presenter said that his wife of 27 years, Stephanie Lowe, and their two daughters, Ruby and Molly, had been supporting him while he had been “coming to terms with the fact that I am gay”.

During an interview on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show on Friday morning (23 October), Schofield opened up about travelling to Cornwall to talk to his mother about his sexuality.

“She knew I was coming and she knew something was up,” he said. “I have floaters in my eyes which drive me crazy. I don’t talk about them very much... it’s like a filthy bathroom window drifting in front of my vision...  

“So we had our fish and chips and I said, ‘Mum, I have something to tell you,’ and she said, ‘Okay, alright,’ and I said, ‘I’m gay.’ And she went, ‘Oh thank god, I thought you were going blind!’”

Schofield also recently told Fearne Cotton's Happy Place podcast he is still “pretty confused” about his identity since making his sexuality public.
