The second series of Poldark started on Sunday and already Aidan Turner and Eleanor Tomlinson are back in Cornwall, filming series three.

Viewing figures for the current series were irrelevant to the BBC who commissioned the third series back in July. According to Radio Times, it will span across nine episodes and will once again be written by Debbie Horsfield, the story itself based on the novels by Winston Graham.

Executive producer Karen Thrussell told the publication: "It's with real excitement that we introduce three very talented young actors to the world of Poldark – Harry Richardson and Tom York playing Demelza's brothers Drake and Sam, and Ellise Chappell as Morwenna, Elizabeth's cousin.

"All are major players in the next volume of Winston Graham and Debbie Horsfield's saga!"

Along with Turner and Tomlinson, returning cast include Heida Reed, Ruby Bentall, Jack Farthing, Luke Norris, Beatie Ednie and Caroline Blakiston will be returning to the series. Other newcomers include Gabriella Wilde (as Caroline Penvenen) and John Nettles (Ray Penvenen).

Horsfield - who also created the show - added: “We're thrilled to be kicking off series three with a fantastic array of new characters and a story which scales new heights of conflict, feuding, passion and drama.

She said of the titular character: ”Ross is older but not necessarily wiser, and his recklessness sometimes costs him, and his loved ones, dear. We're in for a rollercoaster ride where the stakes have never been higher.”

Series two is currently airing on BBC One every Sunday, the first episode of which was watched by 5.1 million people. Turner also made headlines after getting topless within just 20 minutes of the show’s return, much to the internet’s delight.
