Prison Break season 5 footage sees Wentworth Miller back doing what he does best

Old familiars are poised to return in Fox's revival series which will begin January 2017

It's been seven years since we last saw Michael Scofield and the Prison Break gang but, thanks to San Diego Comic-Con 2016, we've been provided with a first full glimpse at Fox's upcoming reboot.

If you've concerns that the premise of the new ten-parter will stray from the original series' trusted formula, cast them to one side: it turns out Scofield is alive, in prison and needs help breaking out (again).

Of course, it's Michael - somehow alive - who generates the plan which begins with, of all things, a piece of chewing gum.

"I'm gonna show you - just like the butterfly's wings, this piece of gum is going to start a sequence of events that will finish on the other side of the world," he tells a fellow inmate in the dramatic style Prison Break fans grew accustomed to during its original run.

Prison Break began in 2005 and tracked the story of Scofield who gets himself imprisoned with the intention of breaking out his innocent brother, Lincoln (Dominic Purcell).

The show ran for four seasons before the axe fell; a supposed swansong arriving in the form of a wrap-up TV movie titled The Final Break in 2009. Fox and creator Paul Scheuring cited the show's Netflix popularity as one of the main reasons to revive the series which Scheuring has branded a "bit of a sequel."

Returning for Fox's event series are the characters Sara Tancredi (Sarah Wayne Callies), Theodore "T-Bag" Bagwell (Robert Knepper), Amaury Nolasco (Fernando Sucre), Rockmond Dunbar (Benjamin Miles "C-Note" Franklin) and Paul Adelstein (Paul Kellerman).

Prison Break returns January 2017.
