‘Bake Off’ presenter’s son, a Conservative MP, voted against the amendment

Prue Leith has reportedly cancelled her Conservative Party membership over post-Brexit food standards.

The Great British Bake Off judge, who has been a vocal supporter of the Tory party, had previously urged the UK government to not allow inferior food to be imported from America after Brexit.

But after MPs last week rejected an amendment to the Agriculture Bill which would have also protected British farmers, the Daily Mail reports that Leith has cancelled her Conservative Party membership.

The reports are particularly surprising as Leith’s son, the Conservative MP for Devizes Danny Kruger, voted with the government to block the amendment.

The Independent has contacted Leith’s representatives for comment.

The TV chef, 80, voted for Brexit in the 2016 referendum, explaining: “I ended up voting for Brexit but I dithered and dithered for ages because there were really good arguments on both sides, and really intelligent people on both sides, it’s such as pity we have everyone fighting.”

In May, Leith was one of few celebrities to show support for Dominic Cummings after it emerged that he had broken lockdown rules by making a 250-mile round trip from London to Durham.

“How about a bit of kindness and tolerance?,” Leith tweeted.
