Charles Ingram, the former army major who was accused of cheating on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, has fiercely criticised the show’s original host Chris Tarrant on Twitter.

Ingram has been posting many tweets about the scandal this week, in time with the arrival of Quiz, a new ITV drama that chronicles the event and subsequent court case.

In 2003, Ingram, his wife Diana and their alleged accomplice Tecwen Whittock were found guilty of conspiring to cheat on the show, after producers noticed suspicious coughs from Whittock when correct answers were read out.

In response to Tarrant’s recent assertion that the Ingrams are “guilty as sin”, the former game show contestant wrote on Twitter: “Tarrant wants to protect his legacy, his team, and the integrity of the UK production. I get that, but there is the more important issue of justice.”

Ingram went on to say that, because Tarrant didn’t hear any suspicious coughs during filming, the host “should have been a defence witness”. He also accused him of feeling “no responsibility towards the people who apply and appear on the show”.

When asked by a Twitter user how he doesn’t “blow up” in response to Tarrant’s “constant jibes”, Ingram replied: “Because he lied to & cheated on his wife who likes rabbits. Tarrant is not the person people think he is. TV does that.

"He suffers from delusions of grandeur and despite no proof I cheated he keeps harping on to protect his mates. I’m sad for him. p.s., I’m still calm.”

Tarrant hasn’t always argued that the Ingrams were guilty. During the trial, it emerged that Tarrant went to the Ingrams’s dressing room to congratulate the couple and drink champagne even after the production team warned him of their suspicions.

At the time, Tarrant had said: “They seemed as normal as people who have just won £1 million would be in that situation. They did seem fine.”

While Ingram has been criticising Tarrant, he has had nothing but praise for Quiz, calling it “terrifyingly accurate” and “excruciatingly enjoyable".
