Sam Bobrick, the creator of Saved by the Bell, has died aged 87.

The news was confirmed by his daughter who told her Facebook followers that Bobrick died in hospital last week after suffering a stroke.

Saved by the Bell ran from 1989 to 1993 and is set to be rebooted with its original cast members as part of Peacock, NBCUniversal’s new streaming service.

Bobrick was also a playwright who wrote more than 40 pieces of work for the stage, but he was most famous for creating the high school sitcom starring Mario Lopez and Elizabeth Berkley.

He was born in Chicago and pursued a career in newspaper editing and songwriting before writing scripts for TV shows including Bewitched and The Flintstones.

Bobrick became writing partners with Ron Clark with whom he created variety show The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour and Broadway play, Norman, Is That You?.

He has a credit on Elvis Presley song “The Girl of My Best Friend”.
