Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell assures fans that reboot will still work without Kim Cattrall

Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell has reassured fans that the rebooted series will work without Kim Cattrall.

On Sunday (10 January), it was announced after months of speculation that the Nineties sitcom would be making a comeback for a 10-part HBO Max miniseries titled And Just Like That...

But while three of the four stars – Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis – will be returning to the franchise, they will be without Cattrall as Samantha Jones.

Cattrall’s absence has led some fans to suggest that the show shouldn’t be remade without her character, but speaking to Page Six, Bushnell insisted that the worry was unwarranted.

“You know what, I think it’s fine,” she said. “Kim is a grown woman. She is 64 and she’s made a decision that I’m sure she has 10 very good reasons for and I respect her for that.”

Explaining that she didn’t know where the reboot would take the characters’ stories, Bushnell continued: “I also think it will be interesting… Kim should be happy — and I think she is happy. I think that her character Samantha is always going to be an inspiration to them.

“So somehow, I imagine she’ll be there in spirit and as an inspiration that gives them a chance of exploring sexuality with different characters.”

Cattrall has publicly distanced herself from Sex and the City and its star, Parker, in recent years amid reports of a feud between the pair.

However, addressing Cattrall’s absence from the reboot, Parker wrote on Instagram on Monday (11 January) that she didn’t dislike her former co-star.

“Samantha isn’t part of this story,” she wrote. “But she will always be part of us. No matter where we are or what we do.”

Sex and the City originally ran on HBO for six seasons from 1998 to 2004, spawning two films in 2008 and 2010. And Just Like That… will reportedly begin filming this spring.
