Netflix has given fans a first look at its new fantasy series Shadow and Bone.

Based on Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse trilogy of novels, the series tells the story of Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), an orphaned soldier with magical powers that may be able to save her war-torn country from the ominous threat of the Shadow Fold.

On Wednesday (27 January), fans were given a first look at the show, which comes to Netflix on 23 April.

The pictures provide a first look at a number of characters, including Li as Alina and Ben Barnes as General Kirigan.

Other members of the cast include Archie Renaux, Freddy Carter, Amita Suman and Kit Young.

Speaking about the series, Bardugo said: “Shadow and Bone takes place in a very different kind of fantasy world. Think Imperial Russia, not Medieval England, repeating rifles instead of broadswords.

“It’s a story about the people who have been told how much they don't matter proving how much they do. And it’s been incredible to see that story take shape on such an epic scale, the battles, the magic, but also the relationships between the characters.”

Shadow and Bone comes to Netflix on 23 April.
