Spitting Image has received the green light for a second series following a successful launch.

The satirical puppet show debuted on BritBox this past weekend as the streaming service’s first original series.

According to a press release, the political satire has already broken records for the streamer. The number of people signing up to BritBox increased ten-fold compared to the average daily rate.

Reemah Sakaan, BritBox’s Chief Creative and Brand Officer, said: "Not only can subscribers look forward to another nine weeks of anarchy but also now another series in 2021.”

The first episode, which aired last Saturday (3 October), proved the series can turn around a sketch quickly. It featured a scene showing Donald Trump announcing that he and Melania had contracted coronavirus – a scenario that occurred only the day before the episode aired.

Other scenes in its debut instalment saw Boris Johnson avoiding his duties by joining university students locked down in halls, and Trump’s rear-end tweeting for him while the president sleeps.

Beyond Spitting Image, BritBox had announced that subscribers can expect four other originals this year, including adaptations of books by notable authors such as Irvine Welsh and Anthony Horowitz.
