'Reviews have not been kind - could close early'

Stephen Colbert presented an award at last night's Tony Awards (11 June) and used the opportunity to tear into Donald Trump likening his presidency to a really bad musical

The late night host was presenting the category 'best revival' when he made a speech lambasting the President without even saying his name.

Colbert noted that it's been a great year for musical revivals, stating, “...especially that one they’re reviving in Washington D.C.”

“It started way off Broadway, in the 80’s, on 5th Avenue. Huge production values," he added. "Couple problems: the main character is totally unbelievable. And hair and makeup - jeesh! No!”

He continued referencing Trump's tenure as President by saying, “[It's] supposed to have a four-year-run, but reviews have not been kind. Could close early.”

Hello, Dolly! went on to win the award.

Colbert has made a habit of criticising Trump on his CBS series The Late Show. He was recently accused of going too far coming under fire for using a slur many deemed homophobic.

The ceremony was hosted by House of Cards actor Kevin Spacey whose stint saw him largely ignore the current US political climate save for a Bill Clinton impression which saw him tamely exclaim: “We already had some surprising winners, haven’t we? I’m not even talking about the Tony Awards.”
