Stephen Colbert mocks Donald Trump's 2020 slogan

Neither Stephen Colbert nor Jimmy Fallon were impressed by Donald Trump’s way of picking his 2020 campaign slogan.

The president launched his re-election bid on Tuesday with a rally in Orlando, Florida, during which he asked the crowd to vote on one of two options for his new motto.

One of them was “Make America Great Again” – the same one he used in 2016, while the other was “Keep America great”.

Mr Trump asked his audience to cheer for the option they liked the most, and the audience was clearly louder after he offered the second option.

“Getting an audience to vote for you is so cheap. The second thing always gets more applause,” Colbert said on his late-night show on Wednesday.

He then demonstrated it by asking the crowd to cheer and clap for two concepts, the first being “vanilla” and the second being “ulcerative colitis” – which predictably received louder cheers despite being a significantly less pleasant option.

Colbert also pointed out that the president ended his address with “Make America Great Again”, even though the crowd had evidently just voted for the other option.

“No, they just chose ‘Keep America great!’ Just seconds before! They chose ‘Keep America great!’ For Pete’s sake, for once in your life, care about the popular vote,” Colbert urged Mr Trump – who lost the popular vote in 2016.

Jimmy Fallon, too, mocked Mr Trump’s speech on his own late show, suggesting a third option for a slogan: “Make Keeping America Great Again, Great Again”.

He then compared the president’s decision to keep using his previous motto and his usual red hat to “when your kid only wants to wear that one superhero outfit to school and you’re like, ‘Whatever gets you on the bus.’”
