Stephen Colbert roasts Melania Trump’s post-White House plans: ‘We keep going until the prenup runs out’

Stephen Colbert poked fun at Melania Trump’s presumed post-White House plans in a recent skit.

Actor Laura Benanti returned to her recurring role as the first lady on Monday’s episode of Colbert’s late show.

Colbert pretended to be conducting an interview in which he asked Trump about her Christmas activities, holiday decorations, and projects for the future.

Benanti’s Trump said she was “hard at work on her White House memoir” and went on to give Colbert a taste of the alleged volume, referring to her childhood on the South Side of Chicago. This doesn’t match Trump’s biography, but that of former First Lady Michelle Obama.

Back in 2016, Trump delivered a speech that closely echoed an address previously given by Obama. Trump’s speechwriter took responsibility at the time.

Colbert accused Benanti’s Trump of plagiarising Obama’s widely successful memoir Becoming, to which the character replied: “How dare you? That is from my book, #BeBestComing” – a reference to Trump’s public awareness campaign Be Best.

In the skit, Colbert also asked Benanti’s character: “There are rumours that unlike the president, you’ve already accepted the election results, so you just want to move on. Is that true?”

“Yes, Stephen,” Benanti replied. “It’s like I keep telling my husband Donald: it’s over. We both know it ended a while ago. Now we just need to accept that and keep going until the prenup runs out.”
