Stranger Things star David Harbour responds to fan theory about Chief Hopper

*Spoiler warning* Actor said theory seems 'pretty crazy' but he hopes it might come true

Stranger Things star David Harbour has offered his take on the post-credits scene in season three, where a brief line of dialogue is believed to have offered a clue to his character Chief Hopper’s fate.

In the final episode of the hit Netflix show’s third series, Chief Hopper was seen in a dramatic fight with a deadly Russian assassin.

When the machine that was being used to re-open the door into the Upside Down is destroyed, fans were immediately led to believe that Hopper was killed in the ensuing explosion.

However, in the short post-credits scene, one of the Russian soldiers standing outside a cell door mutters: “No, not the American.”

The fan theory believes that the American is Hopper, who was somehow captured after the facility was raided by the FBI.

Harbour told Entertainment Tonight of the theory: “I mean, I have no idea! [Laughs] I have no idea! I mean that, of course, is my hope too. It seems pretty crazy though.

“You know, that machine went off and blew up and Hopper seemed to be trapped there. He did glance around a little bit, but he seemed to be trapped and the machine exploded.

“And then you cut to, what was it? It starts with a ‘K’ or something – some town in Russia, right? Where there’s some American and there’s some other prisoner. I don’t know, I mean it seems strange. I don’t know how though.”

In an earlier red carpet interview, Harbour alluded to the final scene where he said there was “this mystery at the end, I don’t really know what’s going on”.
