Big Bang Theory cast talk about getting emotional as they near finale

The Big Bang Theory has passed a television landmark.

With the production of the 276th episode having wrapped, the series has officially become the longest-running multi-camera sitcom of all time, surpassing previous record holder Cheers.

The show's Twitter account confirmed the news with a picture of the cast standing around a tray of cupcakes spelling out "276".

Kaley Cuoco, who plays Penny on the show, wrote on Instagram: "Blessed, humbled, amazed, grateful. Thank you to everyone who has supported us the last 12 years."

Co-star Kunal Nayyar also celebrated the news on Instagram, writing: “What a dream come true. Thank you for your kindness over these past 12 years, there are no words in any language that could ever express the love I have for all of you.”

Only 272 episodes of the show have aired so far, with the 276th coming later this year. Following the 12th season's conclusion, The Big Bang Theory will come to an end, with the final episode coming 16 May.
