Trevor Noah reacted to Donald Trump’s acquittal at the end of his second impeachment trial in a biting segment, at one point drawing a comparison between the former US president and OJ Simpson.

The US Senate voted on Saturday to acquit Trump of inciting the deadly Capitol insurrection on 6 January. Shortly after the verdict was announced, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell remarked in an address: “There is no question that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of that day.

“The people who stormed this building believed they were acting on the wishes and instructions of their President. ...A mob was assaulting the Capitol in his name. These criminals were carrying his banners, hanging his flags, and screaming their loyalty to him. It was obvious that only President Trump could end this.”

On Monday’s instalment of The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Noah sarcastically referred to McConnell’s speech as “yet another profile in courage from Mitch McConnell,” adding: “Basically what he’s saying is Trump caused the riot, Trump is super guilty, and Mitch just hopes that some day, someone else will do something about it.”

The host then mocked a tweet from Eric Trump, which read “2-0” – an apparent reference to the fact that his father has gone through two impeachment trials and was acquitted by the Senate both times after being convicted by the House.

“Now that’s what I’m talking about: two and O,” Noah said. “Obama never even won a single impeachment. S***t’s embarrassing. I mean, say what you want, but Trump is the acquittal GOAT. Sorry OJ, you had a good run but Trump got acquitted twice, and he’s responsible for more deaths.”

OJ Simpson was tried and acquitted in 1995 of the 1994 murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman. He was found liable in the case in a civil suit in 1997 and ordered to pay $33.5m to the victims’ families.
