Vince Vaughn is reported to be in talks to star in the second season of HBO’s True Detective, according to Variety.

The role he is rumoured to play is unknown, but sources told the Hollywood trade magazine that it is unlikely he would play one of the lead detectives in the show.

The Wedding Crashers actor is reported to have been interested in joining the series for a while and has been campaigning with HBO for a part in the show.

Colin Farrell and Taylor Kitsch are also in talks to star in the Emmy-nominated drama after Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson's departure from the series.

A third lead detective is expected to be played by a woman, with Jessica Chastain reported to have been offered the role.

Casting is expected to be confirmed in the next few weeks ahead of filming the second series, which begins next month.

Series creator Nic Pizzolatto is still working on the scripts while HBO producers work to firm up the cast.

Last month, Michael Lombardo, head of programming for HBO, said the new scripts were “more exciting than the first season”.
