Unforgotten viewers – including star Sanjeev Baskhar – are reacting to the surprise ending of the latest episode.
The ITV drama’s fourth series aired its penultimate episode on Monday (22 March), dropping perhaps the most shocking twist to date.
Fans of the show are now agonising over having to wait a week for the sixth and final episode – and are worried about the fate of one of the show’s main characters.
*Spoilers follow – you have been warned*
Episode five saw DCI Cassie Stuart (Nicola Walker) and DI Sunny Khan (Bhaskar) get closer to the truth about what happened to Matthew Walsh, the man whose decapitated body was found in a freezer at the beginning of this series.
After questioning both Deputy Chief Constable Liz Baildon (Susan Lynch) and Fiona Grayson (Liz White), not to mention getting caught up in the troubled family history of Dean Barton (Andy Nyman), Cassie is involved in a serious car accident.
However, just before we see the vehicle driving directly into Cassie, we see all the suspects behind the wheel of their car, leading to the question – is one of them trying to kill her?
In the immediate aftermath of the twist, Bhaskar wrote on Twitter: “So. #Unforgotten Woah how about that ending eh? Only one of the principal characters appears NOT to be in a car. Yes! #sunnysbackpack.”
Author Giles Paley-Phillips replied: “It was a stunner of an ending! Still thinking about it this morning, what a gut punch.”
Lewis Reeves, who plays DC Jake Collier, reacted by tweeting a series of full stops and an “embarrassed face” emoji.
One viewer wrote: “Think I might have let out a scream at that final scene. #Unforgotten another superb episode,” while another added: “OMG you didn’t just end it like that and I’ve gotta wait a week. That’s savage!!!!”
Unforgotten concludes its fourth series on Monday 29 March at 9pm on ITV.
