Westworld season 2 episode 4 ending: The big Man In Black daughter reveal explained

The latest episode of Westworld dropped yet another big reveal that seems to reshape the structure of the HBO series going forward.

With an extended running time, episode four - titled 'The Riddle of the Sphinx' - was always going to be a big affair and after huge teases of a wider conspiracy linked to human cloning, the instalment ended with a more personal reveal linked to the Man In Black (Ed Harris).

The closing moment sees this older incarnation of William continuing on his game set by the late Dr, Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins) with his path colliding with that of Grace (Katja Herbers) who we first meet last week in The Raj before washing up on the shores of Westworld following a run in with a Bengal Tiger.

Only Grace isn't called Grace at all - her name is Emily and she's William's daughter.

Emily's plan currently remains a mystery but she has clearly been to Westworld before which we can decipher from her real lack of fear or confusion after being caught by the Ghost Nation tribe. Will Emily provide an obstacle for William in his hunt to find “The Door”? Quite possibly - especially after the episode provides viewers with more details about Williams past and the suicide of his wife Juliet, the daughter of James Delos (Peter Mullan). As mentioned in a season one episode, Emily blamed him for the death of her mother who died by suicide.

Hints of the reveal are provided earlier in the episode. The following exchange suggests that their reunion won't spell good news.

Lawrence: You think [your daughter] would want to watch you gunned down in front of her?

Man In Black: Probably

We've actually seen Emily before as a young girl in an episode earlier this season. 'Reunion' - the second instalment - features a flashback to Delos' retirement party where Emily is seen commenting on “beautiful” Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood). Juliet steers her away, intent on keeping her daughter away from the hosts.

Quite what Emily was doing posing as Grace in The Raj remains a mystery although it's worth noting she possessed a journal that seemed to feature a map of the park with specific markings pointing out Delos facilities. There's a strong argument to be had in support of the theory that Emily is, in fact, a host (perhaps the human host Ford attempted to clone with help from Bernard?).

It's clear that Ford wanted something over his nemesis and using his daughter would be a surefire way to gain an upper hand. Is she a weapon to be used against William in his masterplan which is currently being enacted?

We see him come around to the belief that attempting to clone humans after they die is a bad idea - maybe Emily is Ford's proof that this isn't the case at all, and her narrative was to cross parks and (conveniently) run into the path of her father in the most disparate of locations. Or perhaps Emily was in cahoots with Ford to be cloned in a bid to exact revenge for the death of her mother?
