After making more than 40 films in his prolific career, Woody Allen is to turn to the small screen, with streaming service Amazon Prime commissioning him to make half-hour series 'Untitled Woody Allen Project'.

There are as yet no details of plot, theme, cast, production schedule or release date, which Amazon promises are coming soon.

"I don’t know how I got into this," Allen commented. "I have no ideas and I’m not sure where to begin. My guess is that Roy Price [Vice President of Amazon Studios] will regret this."

The series could derail the auteur's plan to make a film every year, his next being a drama led by Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone.

"Woody Allen is a visionary creator who has made some of the greatest films of all-time, and it’s an honor to be working with him on his first television series," Price said in a press release.

"From Annie Hall to Blue Jasmine, Woody has been at the creative forefront of American cinema and we couldn’t be more excited to premiere his first TV series exclusively on Prime Instant Video next year."

It's a pretty bold, forward-thinking move for Allen to go with Amazon Prime for distribution, especially given he was accused of being out of touch with some of his recent films, the dialogue in which some critics found anachronistic.

The director follows others who have moved from film to television including Steven Soderbergh, David Fincher and David Lynch.

Amazon Prime had a good night at the Golden Globes on Sunday, scooping a host of awards for transgender drama Transparent.
