Ofcom investigating Today programme over whether report on Bob Marley-branded cannabis 'glamorised' drugs

BBC Radio 4’s Today programme is being investigated by Ofcom over whether it “glamorised” drug use in a report about Bob-Marley-branded cannabis.

The broadcasting regulator is looking into whether the item “condoned, encouraged or glamorised the use of illegal substances”.

A range of cannabis products endorsed by the reggae musician were launched earlier this year after his family struck a deal with a US private equity firm to create a global “Marley Natural” marijuana brand.

During the Today show in question, which was aired on 19 November, business presenter Simon Jack spoke to the chief executive of the Seattle-based firm Privateer Holdings, which is behind the venture.

The products will go on sale next year in countries and jurisdictions where they are legal, and will include Jamaican cannabis strains, cannabis- and hemp-infused creams and lip balms as well as accessories inspired by Marley.

Ofcom announced today it was looking into whether the report breached its broadcasting code.

The BBC has responded to Ofcom and conceded that it could have done more to reflect the social impact of the drug.
