There is much to admire in the various turns the sitcom has taken over the years: Seinfeld was clever; The Office was real; Friends had that familiar thing...
But for laughs per minute, only Fawlty Towers can match Phil Silvers' creation – and Cleese's masterpiece consisted of just 12 half-hour slots. Here – over five discs, 850 minutes and 34 episodes – is a chance to remind yourself of "the king of chutzpah". Better still, hand this 1955 vintage to the next generation and ensure its immortality.
