American Horror Story: Coven, Fox - TV review

Nobody stays down for long on American Horror Story: Coven (Fox). The current series of this horror anthology show sometimes seems like a never-ending merry-go-round of murder and resurrection, murder and resurrection, with the occasional break for a sartorially excellent funeral. Who knew there were so many ways to make black look fabulous?

In last night's episode, "The Axman Cometh", it was the turn of a rare male addition to the cast to return to the world of the living. "The Axeman", we learnt, was a gentleman serial killer who terrorised the streets of New Orleans in 1919 before the suffragette coven of the day lured him to a not-so-eternal resting space. It took only a Ouija board and some restless 21st-century witches to accidentally set his spirit lose again. As if the coven didn't already have enough to worry about.

Madison (Emma Roberts) was still missing presumed dead, headmistress Cordelia had developed second sight after being blinded in an acid attack and voodoo queen Marie Laveau (a typically regal Angela Bassett) had finally reached the end of her tether. Now she wants "every witch-bitch in that house dead". If you haven't yet discovered why this high-camp horror show inspires such devotion from fans, now is surely the time.
