In The £100k House: Tricks of the Trade, we met two couples trying to transform their living spaces on shoestring budgets.

In East Yorkshire, Chris and Claire had bought a former Post Office – only to find their privacy was compromised by the huge shop windows. Mark and Linda, meanwhile, had snapped up a quaint cottage in Leicestershire but found it too dark inside.

Presenter Piers Taylor and his man-bunned sidekick Robert Jamison had the same solution to both problems – rip it out and start again. The results were incredible – Chris and Claire's home looked like a trendy warehouse conversion while Mark and Linda had a funky light-filled space.

On the surface, this was just another home improvement programme but it actually offered something most property shows don't. And that's the fact that the people involved were genuinely improving their properties so they could improve their lives, not so they could flog them for four times their real value and price yet another would-be first-time buyer out of the property market.

Society needs more of this kind of attitude so the BBC should be praised for showcasing it.
