GMTV ratings have hit a new low, falling to 1.3 million. The smallest quarter-hour peak audience since the show started at the beginning of the year, it is also the first time that GMTV has been matched by The Big Breakfast's peak audience. Both shows, however, have probably been hit by the holiday season: only two months ago, GMTV recorded an audience of 2 million while The Big Breakfast had a regular audience of 1.5 million during the spring.

Linford Christie's much-hyped run against Carl Lewis in Gateshead was watched by 10.73 million, the second, in Zurich, by 9.44 million. Figures for his Stuttgart win are not yet available.

All figures for week ending 8 August
