The disappointment that followed the indifferent FA Cup final (first game), was matched in the overall viewing figures. The game was watched by 10.92 million, compared with 12.33 million in 1992 and 14.94 million in 1991. However, though the game was generally agreed to be a switch-off, the audience grew steadily, starting at 9.1 million and reaching 13.4 million for the closing minutes.

The ratings-friendly formula in Peak Practice (ITV Mon) - star actor (Kevin Whately) playing a country doctor - did indeed deliver the goods: 13.43 million viewers turned on. Peak Practice went straight into No 5 in the ITV Top 30, slotting in behind Heartbeat (16.47 million), in which a star actor (Nick Berry) plays a country policeman.
