Upbeat: Mozart's man

MATTHIAS BAMERT, the conductor and director of the Lucerne Festival, is the new musical director of the London Mozart Players. The appointment, to be announced on Monday, follows an unprecedented exercise in try-outs and consultations with the members of the orchestra, who are said to have been unanimous in their choice. Bamert succeeds Jane Glover, now artistic director of the Buxton Festival and one of the four-strong team investigating the future of Britain's orchestras (see story, this page).
