As the vast building site gradually becomes "der neue ", so the city continues to cast its already substantial arts net ever wider with events such as "Dance in August". The 10th instalment of this three-week festival aims to bring the best in international contemporary dance to the German capital, with an eclectic mix of workshops and performances from artists such as Mark Tompkins, the Netherlands Dans Theater, Le Ballet C de la B from France, and Glabert-Azzopardi sia de Dansa from Barcelona.

"Industrial Design in Spain: a Century of Creation and Innovation" features 350 works spanning the last 100 years, taking the organic shapes of Gaudi as a broad starting point. And when you have explored the products and approaches of more than 200 designers from all over the country - organised into thematic, geographical and chronological sections for ease of digestion - make time to see Picasso's Guernica in the room specially designed to display it after its controversial move from the Prado.

San Francisco

Enjoy the airy, light-soaked interior of Swiss architect Mario Botta's Museum of Modern Art as you peruse the current retrospective of American artist Keith Haring's work. The 100-plus pieces, including large-scale, graffiti-style paintings and early drawings, follow Haring's style from his student years until his death from Aids at 31 in 1990.

Emerging from The Avengers less shame-faced than most - if only because he did not have any lines - Eddie Izzard gives his one-man show, "Dress To Kill", its West Coast debut in San Francisco. His unique brand of Clockwork Orange meets Tales of the City camp should go down a storm in the home of Mrs Madrigal.

The Royal Court's production of Conor McPherson's play The Weir finally comes to the country of its setting following its sell-out runs in London. Assuredly directed by the new artistic director of the Royal Court, Ian Rickson, the play is set in a rural bar where a handful of regulars indulge in reminiscing and storytelling, until newcomer Valerie stops them in their tracks with a tale of her own. Sit back and admire the fine ensemble acting - then go to a local bar and discuss the evening's entertainment over a pint of Guinness.
