BBC microphone picks up someone saying 'we're f****d' during Labour split conference

Monday 18 February 2019 17:00 GMT
BBC journalist's mic left live during coverage of The Independent Group's press conference: 'Not going to lie, between this and Brexit we're f****d'

As seven Labour MPs announced their split from the party in a packed press conference, a BBC microphone inadvertently picked up someone mumbling commentary.

And the theme of the commentary?: “We’re f****d.”

On Monday morning, MPs Luciana Berger, Chris Leslie, Angela Smith, Gavin Shuker, Mike Gapes, Ann Coffey and Chuka Umuna said they had left the Labour party.

For Berger, antisemitism, bullying and intimidation was central to her decision, while for Leslie “Brexit was the tipping point”.

And as Berger made her announcement, someone’s whispered comments were picked up on the audio of the BBC’s coverage of the conference.

They can be heard saying:

This is mad.

Not going to lie, between this and Brexit we’re f***d.

The Conservatives are going to win.

People on Twitter seemed to think that that the commentary was very revealing.

And it appears that the same person was picked up on the mic again during the BBC's coverage of Chuka Umunna’s announcement.

Oops.
