Ozala, a western lowland gorilla, cradles her newborn baby at Twycross Zoo in Warwickshire.

Keepers have not so far been able to get close enough to the fiercely protective 16-stone mother to determine the sex of her infant, born last week. The new arrival is 18-year-old Ozala's fourth. "Our keepers suspect it may be a boy," said a spokesman for the zoo. Only 100,000 western lowland gorillas survive in the wild and Twycross is part of a successful primate breeding programme.
