Coldest December in 100 years

Last month was the chilliest December in 100 years and one of the coldest months ever recorded in the UK, the Met Office says.

While globally 2010 has been one of the warmest years on record, in the UK it was the 12th coldest year in records dating to 1910.

Temperatures averaged 8C over the year, while the average for December 2010 was -1C. December's historical average is 4.2C.
