Today The first Eurovision Song Contest was held in 1956; it was won not by Ireland but by Switzerland.

Saturday In the 1925 "Monkey Trial" a Tennessee teacher was charged with teaching evolution; later it became the play and film Inherit the Wind.

Sunday The 10,000th episode of The Archers went out in 1989, with Terry Wogan (of course) making a guest appearance.

Monday In 1958 Jerry Lee Lewis packed in his UK tour after protests that his new bride was the same age as his fans - 13.

Tuesday In 1779 the poet Thomas Moore was born. Later in life he was to receive an advance of 3,000 guineas, a record for poetry (it would be pretty good today).

Wednesday Stravinsky's Rite of Spring had its premier in Paris in 1913; it was a riot - literally - as the audience couldn't take the modern sounds.

Thursday In 1593 playwright Christopher Marlowe was murdered in a Deptford tavern - or was his death faked so that he could be born again as William Shakespeare?
