Apple has proposed to pay compensation to parents whose children made “in-app purchases” without their permission, following claims that it failed to publicise the feature of children-targeted games.

The computer giant said it would need to inform more than 23 million iTunes account holders that they might qualify for the payments.

This follows a lawsuit from Garen Meguerian, a Californian who said his nine-year-old daughter had accumulated charges without his knowledge. He claimed she had spent roughly $200 (£130) on toxin, gems and other “game currencies” within apps including Zombie Café and Treasure Story.
