EA will create games based around the Star Wars franchise, it has been announced today.

Three of EA’s top studios, DICE, Visceral and BioWare, will create the games that will borrow from the films while including original new stories and gameplay.

EA has signed an exclusive licensing agreement with Disney to create Star Wars games for all interactive platforms, while Disney will retain certain rights to develop new games for mobile, tablet and online formats.

Co-president of Disney Interactive John Pleasants said: “Collaborating with one of the world’s premier game developers will allow us to bring an amazing portfolio of new Star Wars titles to our fans around the world.

“This agreement demonstrates our commitment to creating quality game experiences that drive the popularity of the Star Wars franchise to come.”

Disney bought Lucasfilm in October 2012. Its move to further the Star Wars franchise into the gaming market follows plans to release three new Star Wars films and a number of spin-offs based on Star Wars characters.

Star Wars: Episode VII is due for release in 2015, with filmmakers planning to release a Star Wars film every summer from then onwards, alternating between spin-offs and new episodes in the saga.
