The world of Warcraft – i.e. the nine million gamers who spend hours plodding around as fantasy figures in the online multiplayer game – was in shock this week. A rogue user, Jadd, hacked into the game's servers and gave themselves the ability to become a destroyer of other players' long-worked-on characters. Bad Jadd.
After some of the game's users threatened to "call the cops" on the online Oppenheimer, its creator, Activision, was quick to halt the binary genocide, fixing the hack and telling WoW users that "it's safe to continue playing and adventuring in major cities and elsewhere in Azeroth". May we all sleep well tonight upon hearing that.
