The Last of Us Part II - trailer

The Last of Us Part II is released on PS4 today (19 June), and has already been earning rave reviews.

The sequel to the acclaimed 2013 survival horror The Last of Us sees you return to the character of Ellie as she navigates a world filled with deadly fungal zombies.

Throughout The Last of Us Part II, there are 15 combination-lock safes, which contain weapons, upgrades and ammo.

Here is a guide to all 15 safe combinations, including where they are, and how to crack them. For those that can’t figure out the puzzles for themselves, all 15 combinations are listed at the bottom of the article.

Inevitably, spoilers for the game follow...

Safe 1

In the game’s opening chapter, this safe is found in the supermarket in Jackson. The clue is found on the desk next to the safe. Look behind you, and you will see a wall with pictures of “Employees of the Month” – there should be one that stands out.

Safe 2

In Seattle, Day 1, you have the option of exploring the Bank with Ellie in the Downtown area (located at 5th and James). You can find a note detailing the plans for a failed bank heist, which also provides the combination for the safe room. Travel through the safety deposit box room – found at the end of the tills – and the vault should be on your left.

Safe 3

Ellie finds this easily missable safe after going through the fence Downtown at Madison between 5th and 6th during Seattle Day 1. The combination is the same as the code used to open West Gate 2 – so check the list of gate codes that should be in your inventory.

Safe 4

The fourth safe is found in the courthouse in Seattle Day 1. It’s located under a desk by the window before you travel into the car park. The skeletal remains of a FEDRA soldier are nearby. There’s a white board nearby with the combination written on.

Safe 5

In the Capitol Hill segment of Seattle Day 1, you encounter this safe around the time you start seeing explosive tripwires, in a thrift shop that’s by a gym. The safe is placed right at the back, and requires solving two clues to open – the first, on the bulliten board, which leads you to the second, which is written on the walls of the thrift shop’s toilets.

Safe 6

The final safe in Seattle Day 1 is located in a breakroom in the area where you first fight Shamblers. The clue is written on a note left on a table, which points you towards a can of soda. Smash open a vending machine, and you will find part of the answer. Tap the numbers into the lock, and you will gain access to the employee locker room.

Safe 7

At the beginning of Seattle Day 2, you need to find a tattoo parlour, located near the bike shop. Go through the parlour, and there is a small building in the back with a dumpster propped against the door. The safe is inside; you can find the combination written on a note in one of the nearby buildings. Beware though – there are infected inside too.

Safe 8

Later in Seattle Day 2, when you’re en route to the hospital and walking down Route 5, you’ll reach a gate you can’t open, requiring you to use a dumpster to prop up the gate. Before doing so, however, look for a nearby apartment with a truck parked outside that you can climb to enter through the second floor. Once in, you’ll find a note telling you that the safe code corresponds to a wedding anniversary. It’s written on a calendar nearby – count back 30 years from the circled date.

Safe 9

This safe is also found during Seattle Day 2. After travelling through the Merci building, you drop into a pool and emerge on the other side of the road. Go into Weston’s pharmacy – the note containing the full code is found on your way in.

Safe 10

During Seattle Day 3, Ellie acquires a speedboat. After travelling a short distance, you’ll reach a point where a gate blocks your progress, and you have to leave the boat to open it. There’s a caged area in your immediate proximity containing the safe – climb up to the upper level and search one of the dead bodies for a note that discloses the combination. Shift the cart away from the wall to reveal a hole, which leads you into the cage.

Safe 11

During Abby’s Seattle Day 1, you pass by a hardware store. After going through it and the boat repair shop, you come across a trailer. Break a window, go inside, and there’s a WLF gun cache note with the combination on it. The safe itself is then stored in a nearby building, which you can enter through a hole in the wall, around the left side.

Safe 12

In Abby’s section of the game, you come across a row of shops, including a bakery and the Red Dragon Bar, and what looks like an antiques shop. Travel through the bar up to the second floor, and jump across into the opposite building. There’s a note on the second floor that tells you the combination to the safe – which is kept in the bakery opposite.

Safe 13

The final safe in Abby’s Seattle Day 1 is found on the crashed ship, at the back of the boat. The combination clue is written on the mutiny note.

Safe 14

After climbing the rapids and crossing the highway overpass in Abby’s Day 2, you jump down into an apartment, which contains the safe and notes left between two of the building’s neighbours. Look at the apartment numbers on the doors in the hallway to determine the combination, as per the note’s instructions.

Safe 15

The last safe is located in the skyscraper in Abby’s Seattle Day 2, which you must travel down on your way to the hospital. Search the storage room next to the gym entrance, before the spore-filled area. A clue for the combination is written on an artefact inside the back room – the code is the same as the Wi-fi password, which is written near the juice bar.
