Mario Party 10

***

Wii u (£29.86)

N64 Mario Party fans will be hoping for a version as good as the original, but while the aesthetics of Mario Party 10 are great, and some of the minigames fun, you don't get to play enough of them. Mario Kart 8 showed how a kids' game can be adored by adults, but this centres too much on luck instead of skill. A group of friends don't want luck, they want strategic, fast-paced competition. New modes Amiibo and Bowser spruce it up, but this party could've been better.

Battlefield Hardline

****

Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4, PS3, PC (£49.99)

Developer Visceral Games has taken over from DICE – and changed everything. In previous editions the series focused on the sheer carnage of online, but Hardline puts a lot of stock in its campaign mode; the stealthy approach. The animation, acting and storyline are excellent, and the multiplayer mode doesn't lose any of its insanity. Arenas may be urban centres with cops and robbers rather than soldiers but no allure is lost. A brilliant twist on a much-loved genre.
