The newest game in the Metal Gear Solid franchise has been announced: Survive.

The game will be a four-player, online survival game that will follow on from the word of Metal Gear Solid 5.

It will be the first full game made after the series' creator, Hideo Kojima, departed from it. Konami hasn't said how much involvement Mr Kojima will have in the game.

The game will be released in 2017, on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

It "picks up from the ending of Metal Gear Solid 5, according to Konami, "to an alternate timeline caused by unexplained wormholes forming in the sky". "Players find themselves on distorted desert landscapes full of massive half-formed structures, living biological threats, and the remains of a once strong military force now litter the landscape," Konami said in a statement.

In that environment, players will be tasked with trying to stay alive. They will work together to "strategically manage massive threats" alongside three other players from online.

"We are delighted to announce another exciting addition to the Metal Gear franchise,” said Tomotada Tashiro, European President at Konami. "Metal Gear Survive will offer a fresh take on the series’ famed stealth elements but within a unique co-op setting that is designed for a truly engrossing multi-player experience.”

The game was launched at the Gamescom conference, along with a new trailer.
