Minecraft maker Mojang launches story-based spinoff game
Mojang has teamed up with Telltale, makers of popular Walking Dead and Game of Thrones games, to make the new game
Mojang, the maker of Minecraft, has teamed up with another developer to create a narrative-based version of the incredibly popular block-based game.
Minecraft is based in an open world — meaning that the only given instruction has been surviving attacks from monsters in the world. Players have developed the game to create a community working towards various aims, but never before has the game had an explicit narrative.
But Mojang, which was bought by Microsoft earlier this year, has teamed up with Telltale to create a narrative version of the game. Telltale created hugely popular story-based games including those for Game of Thrones and Walking Dead.
It won’t explain the backstory of The Player, the character that Minecraft fans play with who’s also known as Steve, or delve into the backstory of the Minecraft world. It will be an entirely separate story but will take place in the Minecraft world.
Mojang made the announcement through an 8-bit game called Info Quest II. “Play Info Quest II. You might learn something”, teases the company in the announcement of the mini-game, and playing through it opens up the announcement as well as other bits of information.
The game is expected at some point in 2015, and will launch for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, PS Vita, PC, Mac and iOS.
