1. Marks & Spencer consults with designers such as Betty Jackson and Tanya Sarne from Ghost, to ensure a strong design link throughout production. Best buy: long cotton ribbed belted cardigan, pounds 40.

2. Paul Smith, best known for snappy men's suits, has since October 1994 also provided smart suits and separates for women at work. Most affordable pieces are in their fantastic range of contemporary jewellery. Silver target necklace, pounds 39.

3. Clements Ribeiro for Dorothy Perkins' spring/ summer collection features all the sheer floral chiffon from the catwalks, with added wearability. Best on offer: floral ballet wrap-top with peach underslip (far left), pounds 40.

4. Warehouse, 21 years old this year,was founded by Jeff Banks, of Clothes Show fame, and the Bennet brothers. Affordable clothes with an innovative feel. Best buy: lime ruffled sun dress, pounds 40.

5. Otto Glanz, best known for excellent belts, has a new and brilliant range of floral and feather hairbands (right), up to pounds 40, from good department stores.

6. WH Smith, aged 205, today sells more than 1,500 magazine titles, including the leading fashion glossies Vogue, Elle and Marie Claire. To subscribe yearly to one of these costs from around pounds 30.

7. Jigsaw, opened in 1972, has 33 stores in the UK. The new flagship store on New Bond Street was designed by John Pawson in 1996. The current collection is Seventies-influenced, simple and glamorous. Best buy: chocolate- brown striped, belted cotton vest, pounds 45.

8. Browns Focus, Browns' new shop on South Molton Stree, provides a forum for innovative design from the like of Hysteric Glamour, YMC and Kirk Originals. It promises to commission young British artists to design window installations, with video art projected in its stairwell and exhibitions of new Brit art. Best buy: khaki nylon rucksack, pounds 35, by YMC.

9. Fenwicks, founded in 1882, now has eight fashion stores, the most famous of which is in Bond Street. Best buy: turquoise crystal beaded bag (right), pounds 45.

10. French Connection's current collection is inspired by the Seventies American TV series Rhoda, about a girl living in an apartment in New York - clean, simple lines in modern fabric. Best buy: "Spirit anemone" organza top, pounds 40n
