The rain returned to Heaton Park yesterday, but it could not spoil a thrilling men's pairs final, which was won by Scotland's George Sneddon and Alex Marshall.

England's Dean Morgan and Stephen Farish held a one-shot lead going into the 15th and last end. But the Scots held their nerve to take the last end by three shots and secure a 12-10 victory.

Marshall, who has enjoyed success at the world outdoor and indoor championships, was delighted. "I'd rather win a Commonwealth Games medal than a world bowls medal," he said. "They are all prized possessions, but to get your first medal at the Commonwealth Games, especially a gold, is fantastic."

Northern Ireland's Jeremy Henry had to settle for silver in the men's singles after losing 21-15 in the final to South Africa's Robert John Donnelly. Malaysia's Ahmad Siti Zalina won the women's title, beating Australia's Karen Murphy, 21-19.
