Cycling: Hat-trick of velodrome victories for Australia

Australia underlined their dominance of the cycle track last night by beating England's men in a final for the third successive evening.

After Bradley Wiggins lost to Brad McGee in the individual pursuit on Wednesday, and the team pursuiters had to settle for silver on Thursday night, it was the team sprinters who heaped more misery on the hosts, who are still looking for a cycling gold.

Jason Queally, Jamie Staff and Andy Slater lost out to a performance of power and control by the Australians Ryan Bayley, Sean Eadie and Jobie Dajka, the individual sprint winner.

Eight out of 11 golds have now gone to Australia, with only Scotland's Chris Hoy and New Zealand duo Greg Henderson and Sarah Ulmer denying them the full set.

Hoy, with Ross Edgar and Craig McLean, was in the Scottish team that won bronze by beating New Zealand.

England's Chris Newton won bronze after double gold medallist Graeme Brown was disqualified from the men's point race last night.

The Australian was pulled out by the race commissaires who ruled he had caused the crash which led to the Welshman Will Wright being helped from the track. Wright went over the Isle of Man rider Mark Kelly, who hit the barrier at the top of the track before sli-ding back down, the result, the judges ruled, of Brown moving out as he hit the curve.

Wright's helmet shattered and there were fears he had suffered serious injury. However, with help, he limped to the pits for treatment.

Greg Henderson won New Zealand's first gold on the track, while Australian Mark Renshaw earned silver.

Australia's Tour de France stage winner, Brad McGee, has pulled out of tonight's Commonwealth Games road race with a viral infection. He will be replaced by Luke Roberts, a member of the team pursuit squad that broke the world record on Thursday night.
